Business Days Calculator
Count working days between two dates, or add or subtract them to find a planning date. Exclude observed US federal holidays and your own closed dates, then inspect the day-by-day result.
Your result
A clear answer, with the dates behind it.
Enter your dates and choose whether to exclude observed US federal holidays. You can inspect each day after calculating.
The method
Count the days that actually qualify
The calculator walks one calendar date at a time using Monday through Friday as the working week. Count mode includes both endpoints when eligible. Add and subtract modes exclude the starting date, then count the first eligible date as day 1. If enabled, recurring US federal holidays use the observed weekday when a fixed-date holiday falls on a weekend. A custom closure already excluded as a weekend or federal holiday is not deducted again.
Example 1
A holiday changes the next business day
In 2026, July 4 falls on Saturday, so the federal Independence Day observance is Friday, July 3. Add one business day to Thursday, July 2: July 3 and the weekend are excluded, making Monday, July 6 the result. A different workplace may follow a different schedule.
- Start
- Thu, Jul 2, 2026
- Holiday observed
- Fri, Jul 3
- Add
- 1 business day
- Result
- Mon, Jul 6, 2026
Example 2
A custom closure counts only once
From Friday, September 25 through Monday, October 5, 2026, there are seven weekdays. Mark Thursday, October 1 as a custom closed date and the count becomes six. Add five business days from September 25 with that closure and the result moves from October 2 to October 5.
- Range
- Sep 25–Oct 5, 2026
- Without custom closure
- 7 business days
- Close Oct 1
- 6 business days
- Add 5 from Sep 25
- Oct 5 with closure

Assumptions & limits
- Dates are calendar dates from 2024 through 2035. Count ranges are limited to 366 calendar days and movements to 366 business days.
- The default workweek is Monday through Friday. It cannot model a different weekly schedule.
- The federal option uses recurring US federal holidays and observed weekdays. It excludes state, local, employer and one-off closures unless you add them as custom dates. An observed New Year holiday can fall on December 31 of the previous year.
- A planned date is not a legal, banking, shipping or payroll deadline. Confirm the applicable jurisdiction, cutoff time and organization policy.
- Your entries stay in this browser session unless you deliberately copy the summary or download the CSV. The file is generated on your device.
Keep in mind
Common mix-ups
Does the calculator include the start date?
Count mode includes both endpoints when they qualify. Add and subtract modes begin after the starting date, so one business day from a Friday is usually Monday.
Are weekends and holidays both deducted?
A single closed date is deducted once. A custom closure on a weekend or a federal holiday does not reduce the result twice.
Does every US business use federal holidays?
No. Federal observance is an optional planning rule, not a representation of your employer, court, bank, state or carrier calendar. Add known local closures separately.
