How to look up a SIC code

Start with what the establishment actually does. A broad word such as “software” can describe several industries; the official scope helps separate them.

  1. Search the main activity. Try specific words such as “custom software” or “office cleaning,” or enter a known code.
  2. Read the industry scope. Check the official examples and any activities directed to another industry.
  3. Compare close candidates. Keep up to three four-digit entries and review their differences.
  4. Keep the reference. Download the candidate CSV or copy the summary with the source, classification version and source status.
Two independently checked decisions

A similar name does not mean the same activity.

Software work

Custom programming or packaged software?

7371 Computer Programming Services covers programming on a contract or fee basis. 7372 Prepackaged Software covers the design, development and production of prepackaged software. The 7372 definition directs custom programming to 7371.

Compare the actual business activity rather than picking a code from the word “software.”

Outdoor services

Lawn care or artificial turf installation?

0782 Lawn and Garden Services lists lawn care, mowing and related services. Its official description directs artificial turf installation to 1799 Special Trade Contractors, Not Elsewhere Classified.

A search should not treat an excluded activity as a positive lawn-care match. Keep the leading zero in 0782.

What the digits tell you

The letter identifies a division in the reference. Two digits identify a major group, three an industry group and four a detailed industry. A form that asks for a code may specify a different level; read its instructions.

Is the request really for U.S. SIC?

UK Companies House

Companies House uses a separate five-digit condensed SIC list. A UK code such as 01110 must not be shortened into the U.S. code 0111.

SEC filings

The SEC publishes its own filing-code list, including codes such as 6770. That list and a company’s EDGAR assignment are separate from this general 1987 industry reference.

Common SIC lookup questions

Check the code and its context.

What is a SIC code?

Standard Industrial Classification groups establishments by activity. This lookup uses the U.S. 1987 SIC reference presented by OSHA. Four-digit entries describe detailed industries; two- and three-digit groups provide broader context.

Can I search for a company’s assigned code?

This tool searches industry definitions and example activities. For an assigned code, use the relevant registry or receiving organization; for SEC filers, start with the company’s EDGAR record and the SEC list.

Does “not elsewhere classified” mean any business can use that code?

No. An NEC entry belongs to a particular activity group. Read its scope and compare neighboring industries. An unmatched search is not a reason to automatically choose an NEC code or 9999.

What does 9999 mean?

9999 is the separate Nonclassifiable Establishments reference. The original OMB manual puts its branch in Division K; OSHA places that branch under J. It is kept separately here and is not an ordinary industry candidate for the shortlist.

Are my searches saved or sent to a search service?

Search and comparison run in this browser tab after loading a fixed reference file. Your activity words and shortlist are not sent to a search API, put in a URL or automatically saved. Download or copy the shortlist when you want to keep it.
