Freight Density Calculator

Measure a packed pallet, crate or carton. Enter its outside dimensions and gross weight to see density. Add different units when you need a shipment total and a worksheet.

The method

Measure the packed envelope, then divide weight by volume

Use the greatest outside length, width and height of the unit as it will be shipped. Include the pallet, packaging, overhang and any projections. Weight is the gross packed weight of ONE identical unit. Quantity multiplies both mass and volume. For a mixed shipment, add every group’s gross weight and outside volume before dividing: an average of the individual densities gives the wrong shipment result.

Example 1

One packed pallet: 10 pounds per cubic foot

A packed pallet measures 48 × 40 × 36 inches and weighs 400 lb including its packaging. Its outside volume is 69,120 cubic inches, or 40 cubic feet. Divide 400 by 40 for a density of 10 lb/ft³ (pcf). Two identical pallets double both weight and volume, so their density stays 10 pcf.

Outside volume
40 ft³
Density

Example 2

A mixed shipment: divide the totals

Add a 24 × 24 × 24 inch crate weighing 160 lb to that pallet. The crate contributes 8 ft³ at 20 pcf. Together they weigh 560 lb and occupy 48 ft³: shipment density is 560 ÷ 48 = 11.6667 pcf, displayed as 11.67. Averaging 10 and 20 would give 15 and overstate the density. With two of the 400 lb pallets and one crate, use 960 lb ÷ 88 ft³ = 10.9091 pcf.

Assumptions & limits

  • This is a packed-envelope density calculation. It does not assign an official freight class, NMFC code, carrier rate, dimensional-weight bill, stackability allowance or loadability certification.
  • The outer rectangular envelope includes unused space inside the measured dimensions. Use actual packed dimensions and gross weights; the tool does not verify your measurements.
  • Choose inches/pounds or centimetres/kilograms per group. Exact conversion factors are 1 in = 0.0254 m, 1 ft = 0.3048 m and 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg. Totals are aggregated before rounding.
  • Changing units converts the measurement rather than reinterpreting it. Converted fields display 2 decimals; exact original measurements stay in the calculation until that field is edited. CSV includes exact normalized measurements for review.
  • Use 1–100 groups with 1–999 identical units each. Typed dimensions range from 0.01 to 10,000.00 in the chosen unit; typed gross weight ranges from 0.01 to 999,999.99. Up to 2 decimal places. Converted equivalents may lie outside the original entry range.
  • Every included group must be valid before shipment totals or copy/downloads are available. A blank new group is incomplete, not silently excluded. Labels are optional and support up to 64 ASCII letters, numbers, spaces and _ . / -, starting with a letter or number.
  • Measurements and labels stay in this tab, without uploads, analytics or autosave. Downloads are prepared on your device. Download before leaving the page.

Keep in mind

Common mix-ups

What does pcf mean?

Pcf means pounds per cubic foot, also written lb/ft³. It expresses how much the packed unit weighs for each cubic foot of its outside volume. Kilograms per cubic metre expresses the same density on a metric basis.

Does the height include the pallet?

Yes. Measure from the bottom of the packed handling unit to its highest point. Include the pallet and packaging. Also measure the widest length and width, including overhang or projections.

Can I get freight class from density alone?

No official class is assigned here. NMFTA identifies density, handling, stowability and liability as classification characteristics. Confirm the applicable item and classification with the appropriate carrier or classification resource.

Should I enter the weight of all my pallets?

Enter the gross weight of ONE unit in each group and then its quantity. Entering a combined weight with quantity above one counts the mass again. If pallets differ in size or gross weight, put them in separate groups.

Why did the shipment total disappear?

An included group is blank or invalid. Finish its required fields, correct the indicated error, or remove the unused group. This keeps a partial shipment from looking complete in your downloaded worksheet.

Sources & method notes

NMFTA — How is the density of a handling unit calculated?

Packed-envelope measurement and gross shipment-weight division. The method includes the greatest dimensions and all projections.

NMFTA — What is a freight class?

Classification also considers handling, stowability and liability. This calculator deliberately reports density without assigning a class.
